Insight

Why we write resumes through conversation.

A template can format a life. It cannot understand one. Here is how the conversation changes the document.

5 min read

A template asks what your job title was. A conversation asks what the job actually required of you.

The difference shows up in the bullet points. Template bullets describe duties. Conversation bullets describe consequences — what changed because you were in the room.

We ask slow questions on purpose: What did the team look like before you arrived? What broke most often? What did people come to you for when the process failed?

Those answers are rarely on anyone's old resume, and they are almost always the reason someone gets called back.

This is also why we do not write faster than we listen. The document is downstream of the understanding.
